Sir Nicholas Mostyn has made an unprecedented contribution to developing the law and practice of divorce and financial remedies.
He was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1980, took Silk in 1997 and was elected a Bencher in 2005. He was appointed an Assistant Recorder in 1997, a Recorder in 2000 and authorised to sit as a High Court Judge in the same year. He was appointed a High Court Judge (Family Division) in 2010 and was a Member of the Family Procedure Rule Committee from 2010 to 2023. He was the National Lead Judge of the Financial Remedy Court and Judge in Charge of Standard Family Orders from 2018 to 2022.
During his career, he was involved with high profile cases such as White v White, Miller v Miller and Radmacher v Granatino. He was a primary driver in the creation of the Financial Remedies Court.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2020 and in consequence took early retirement in 2013. In that year, he was a cofounder of the award-winning podcast Movers and Shakers, and in 2014 was a cofounder of the new Parkinson’s charity King’s Parkinson’s Fund. He is a tireless campaigner for the adoption of the Parky Charter seeking improved care for sufferers of the condition and urges all to sign the new Parliamentary petition to that end. He is also a cofounder of the legal podcast Law and Disorder with Lord Charlie Falconer and Baroness Helena Kennedy KC.
