How Expats can Benefit from Recent UAE Law Changes

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced changes to the law in November 2020 which cover divorce, wills, and local rules around unmarried couples and the consumption of alcohol. The expat community based in the UAE will hugely benefit from these recent changes to the legal system in the country. One of the most significant developments related to divorce, separation and the division of assets if a marriage break down.

Here, Expat Focus interviews Alexandra Tribe to discuss these recent changes, answering questions such as:

  • Can expats in the UAE  choose to have their personal affairs dealt with according to the the law of their home country?
  • What do these changes mean for inheritance, wills and divorce?
  • Can I now legally live with my partner in the UAE without being married?
